Beginning to Blog

Published Monday, July 26, 2010 by Ciny Marchant

Beginning to blog is probably easy; continuing to blog is much harder.  I have been a blogger since June of 2008 and write three blogs for the Northeast side of Indy.  The rewards are big.  The time involved is also big.

The barriers to blogging are often things like time, ideas or ability.  I’d like to try to give you ways to overcome those barriers.  The first thing to a successful blog is ideas, what to blog about.  I have staples that I use each month that create a framework and allow me to relax a bit on the idea generation front.  My staples include:

  • A real estate term defined such as DOM, escrow, MLS sheet, etc
  • A market report
  • A neighborhood report
  • Buyer Tip Post
  • Seller Tip Post
  • Guest Post

Then I pepper that with a restaurant review, a local event, a news story, etc.

Let’s move to ability.  Writing is something you probably need to like to do.  You don’t need to write a book though, about 1000 words or three or four paragraphs mixed in with a picture or two will be a great blog post.

Finally, time.  I blog for my Fishers blog about every 4th day; my other blogs are more like once a week.  Blogging more often moves your Google ranking up faster, but steady gets it done too.  You need to plan to write for 6 months without any reward.  But, after that, rewards are steady.

Most REALTORS® fail in the consistency arena.  We like shiny new things that can bring revenue, but we are often overwhelmed with business and something like blogging is easy to put on the back burner.  The price you will pay for doing that is losing all the work you have already done.

In a nutshell….Create Consistent Content
